The year 2008 was already an important one for the Jersey Across Group, as we were celebrating 25 years since the group was founded in 1983, and started taking small groups of people with disabilities to Lourdes.

Since then the Group has evolved and grown, so that we now have a strong leadership with the full backing of  a hard working Committee and loyal membership.

However we were surprised and delighted when we were informed in June that the Jersey Across Group had been announced as one of 79 volunteering groups from across the UK winning this year’s

Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service,

which recognises the outstanding contributions made to local communities by groups voluntarily devoting their time for the benefit of others.

The prestigious National Honour, which is equivalent to the MBE, sets the national benchmark for excellence in volunteering, and the activities of those awarded have been judged of the highest standard.

The actual Award was presented to the Group by  the Governor of Jersey at the Queen’s Birthday Levee, and it is now displayed at St Thomas Church.

Finally four members of the Jersey Across Group were delighted to accept an invitation to attend a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, which was hosted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth .
